2021 – Ruby Matenko

Ruby Matenko is the older sister of Max Matenko. Recently she has been seen in Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, an episode of Alexa and Katie, and has a popular channel on YouTube!

1. What would you say is the biggest difference in auditioning now?
I would say that now, most auditions are self-tapes, so there are hardly any auditions in person. This is both good and bad in my opinion. It’s good because you can do many, many takes, do it over and over again until you think it’s good enough. At the same time, however, I miss the personal interactions with the casting directors.

2. What was your day like on set shooting for Alexa and Katie?
It was such an amazing day. I remember how nice the whole cast was, and how fun the set was. I think I remember it being a multicam show, so that was also interesting. I had a guest spot, so we did my lines over and over again because we wanted to get all these funny variations, and it was so much fun. The set was amazing and so detailed, I loved being on it and being surrounded by so many amazing, talented people.

3. How did you enjoy working with the cast?
The cast was so sweet and welcoming. When we weren’t filming, we would make jokes and laugh together, and in between takes, we would also have fun. Everyone was so good at their roles, and they were such good actors and actresses. It was really amazing to watch.

4. What was the best part working on the film Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made?
I would have to say that there were two best parts. One was that we got to go on location to both Vancouver and Portland that whole summer, and both places were so interesting and we got to see so many new sights. I love to travel and see new places, so that was really fun for me. The second best part was working with the cast of kids, and also working with director Tom McCarthy. He is such a talented and amazing director. It was such a great experience to work with him.

5. How did you enjoy filming in Oregon?
I had so much fun filming in Oregon! I remember they had a lot of interesting places to see, and a lot of delicious restaurants. The hotel we stayed at was great, too, and since the whole cast was staying there, it was so much fun! When I wasn’t filming, my family and I went across the bridge that connects Oregon and Washington, but we didn’t realize it, and we actually ended up eating dinner in Washington that night. We didn’t know that we weren’t still in Oregon until someone told us, so that was really funny!

6. What drew you to your character Maxine?
Maxine has been one of my favorite roles that I have ever played. As we were filming, she turned into such a funny, dark character, and I’ve always enjoyed playing roles like that. In the movie, she is accused of being responsible for the death of the class hamster, and I actually went through a similar experience like that myself. When I was around 10, I got a guinea pig and it died just 3 days after I got it. Playing the role of Maxine really reminded me of that happening.

7. What inspired you to start a YouTube channel?
Being an actress, I have always been the one on-camera and not behind the camera. So, I have always found the behind-the-camera work very interesting, like post-production. When I am doing YouTube, I get to combine my passions: filming and editing. I just love the whole video-making process as a whole. Besides that, I have always loved watching YouTube videos and I wanted to make videos that teenagers could relate to, which was another part of my inspiration.

8. How do you choose which subjects will be covered on your vlogs?
When I first started my YouTube channel, I didn’t really know exactly what I was going to post on it. First, I started with basic teen lifestyle videos, but then one day, when I was getting started with my channel again, I filmed a video talking about my first period, and people really seemed to like that one! So, I have started making a lot of period videos, but I also make relatable teenage videos.

9. What do you like the most about having your brother appear in some episodes with you?
I love that we get to hang out together and have fun while filming. Sometimes I like to show him what I’m doing when I’m editing the video, and it’s always fun to watch the video with him after and laugh together.

10. Do you have any special plans for “Rubix Cubix” in 2022?
Well, I definitely plan to keep uploading videos! I would love to start making even more unique period-related videos. I also want to begin doing livestreams as much as I can, so that my subscribers and others can come on the livestream and ask period advice in the comments!
