2019 – Raphael Luce

Raphael Luce is the older brother of Jophielle Love who plays Violet Barnes on General Hospital. Raphael has done work for PBS Kids, the film Moon Manor and does stunt work!

1. How did you get started doing stunt work?
It’s hard to resist wanting to do stunts when your parents are stunt performers. My mom (Karine Mauffrey) @Bus_High_Life has been a stunt woman for 18 years. She has worked in over 40 movies and TV shows… She and my dad (Jade Kindar-Martin) met while working in Cirque du Soleil. My dad is a high-wire walker @fire_high_wire and he is the only one in the world to perform a really big wire walk on a 100 ft long flaming wire. I grew up trying everything with them and I like it! I actually got my SAG card working on Sydney to the Max as a stuntman for Danny Wayne @_Danny_Wayne. I was so happy.

2. Do you have a favorite type of stunt to do?
Yes and no. As a kid hired to do stunts, you don’t get to do really exciting or dangerous stunts until you are 18 years old, so, in the mean time I train every type of skills I can. I have been very fortunate to train every week with a group of professional stuntmen lead by my a great stunt coordinator: John Moio @johnmoio at Bob Yerkes’ backyard. My mom started there too. I have been training high falls up to 30 feet into air bags, air rams, Russian swing, stage fights and other parkour skills. High falls are the most exciting and also a bit scary but you learn to trust yourself and go step by step.

3. What was the experience like filming NCIS: New Orleans?
Well, NCIS has taught me A LOT about the business and in a way, all the disappointments it can bring and how to cope with it. NCIS already called me to stunt double on the show last year … it would have been my first stunt job and given me my SAG card… It was very exciting. A few days before the shoot, they canceled it. I was heart broken. A year later, they called me again, and after another last minute change of schedule, I flew all night to New Orleans, went straight to the set. Got wigged (that was very fun and uncomfortable as the hours passed), rehearsed the scene with the stunt coordinator, Jonathan Arthur, met my actor, and … when the scene came … the actor ended up doing the whole scene himself! 😩 Well, it wasn’t a hard stunt, but it was a bit disappointing. I kept my smile on of course, I was still happy to be there… and of course, I still got paid to do nothing! 😉 My mom told me that all these things and changes happen all the time in the business and you have to learn to not over dramatist them. So, at least I learned a lot and was on set to observe and learn about how everything works.

4. How did you enjoy playing the trumpet on Mister Chris and Friends? How long have you been playing?
I don’t play the trumpet actually. I play a little bit of ukulele, guitar and piano. I’d love to learn to play a bit of all instruments. Mr Chris and Friends is a special show for me because Chris is a personal friend. He owns a farm, Bread and Butter, in Vermont.I was born in Vermont. My Nana lives there. Every week end we would go to a big cook out at his farm and he would play songs for the kids. We would dress up silly and run, dance and sing with him. Mr Chris and friends is a PBS Kids TV show inspired by Mr Rogers. It is for little kids. I was part of the first season too. But for the second season, I got to guest star for a whole episode next to Chris. It was very special. My Grand Pa, Tom Tintle, came with me… I was very happy he could be with me that day. I wish Mr Chris and Friends a lot of success. We need more of those inspiring shows for young kids.

5. Do you have a favorite part of traveling for work?
Just the excitement to be on the way to an exciting new job… other than that, flying is not the most exciting… makes me a bit anxious. Now, traveling in our bus with my family is exciting… but that’s not how I get to work! 😜

6. What was the experience like filming Moon Manor?
Now, that, was fun! I had lines so it is different than stunt work… very different. I loved having to work with the two women directors Erin Granat and Machete @machetebangbang and @justeringranat. It’s about the life of Jimmy and how he decide to plan his own last day of life and funeral. It sounds sad but it is actually a celebration of life. I played young Jimmy. I realized that all the classes we take at Young Actors Studio @theyoungactorsstudio are useful! The morning of the shoot, I learned a good lesson… I was doing parkour on the way to work, just goofing around … I missed a step onto a wall and hit my chin on it…showed up at work all scratched! Ugh … Not really “camera ready”! 😩 And THAT is why actors don’t do their own stunts! LOL Even if sometimes they want to! You can check it out @moon_manor_movie

7. What has been your favorite project to work on?
Well, it sounds silly but I have been part of two game shows so far and I really enjoyed doing those because they are full of fun parkour challenges. They are exciting and fun. You know… you watch those on TV and you go “wow… I’d love to be part of those!” Well, It was as fun as I imagined! One of them is Secret Agent challenges on Amazon and the other one will be on Disney channel. TBC…

Yes… I wish you all happy holidays and a happy New Year! I wish everyone one fun adventures, love, and happiness. I am so grateful for the fun we have with my family working in this industry. I hope 2020 will be full of new fun! I am very proud of my little sister @jophiellelove and brother @therealgabrielsky for their work on General Hospital lately.
