2019 – Madeleine and Caroline Valencia

Madeleine and Caroline Valencia are young performers in New York City and both are members of the Broadway Youth Ensemble. This year Madeleine has been busy working for Target, Caroline for GAP Factory, and both were in an off-broadway production of A Little Princess!

1. Madeleine, what has the experience been like being a part of the Broadway Youth Ensemble?
It has been so much fun! I’ve made some amazing friends from the Broadway community and we sing together! I get to try out solos when we perform at outreaches to the community. We make people feel good by singing to them! It’s an amazing experience. It is one of my favorite things I have ever done!

2. What went into preparing for your role in A Little Princess? What was your favorite part of performing in the show and do you ever get nervous in front of big crowds?
I do get a little nervous in front of crowds-but not much. Once I’m on for a few minutes I relax. To prepare I practiced my songs all the time-and with my singing coach, Amelia DeMayo. I also prepared a cockney accent! It was amazing to have my debut off broadway and Laura Luc of KOTA productions is an amazing director. I made so many friends while rehearsing for a Little Princess. The singing community in NYC is actually kind of small because we all audition together! I’m happy to see my friends at every audition!

3. How did you enjoy working for Target?
Target is definitely one of my favorite jobs EVER. I am very lucky that they ask me back regularly. Clothes are my favorite thing-and to get to try dozens of different looks at every shoot with a stylist-well-that’s totally heaven.

Do you have a favorite look you got to model?
I love all of the outfits that I was photographed in! I think my favorite though is an Art Class outfit where I wore very BOHO-CHIC bell bottomed pants and a big comfy, glamorous jacket. I looked like I was maybe a Rock Star or something.

4. What is the best thing you have done at an audition this year?
I auditioned for a part that involved doing a southern accent and singing a country song. I picked Taylor Swift. I had a lot of fun preparing for the audition. My mom and sister and I speak in different accents all the time. Southern is one we do a lot. So, I felt pretty good with that. Singing auditions are brand new to me-because I’m finally ready to do them. I’m super excited about where my singing will lead. My auditions have become more challenging as I get older and I really love preparing!

5. What are your goals career wise for 2020?
Well-I believe in thinking big. And I will be on Disney, Disney XD or Nickelodeon. I believe that the universe is listening and it will happen.

6. Caroline, how did you enjoy performing in A Little Princess? What was the best part of doing the show with your sister?
I loved learning lines and I had a little solo. I loved meeting new friends and it was super cool to be on the stage with my sister. It’s the third time that I have performed with my sister. The first time was about 3 years ago in a commercial for Walmart. And two Christmases ago, my sister and I were featured in the LEGO holiday window store at Rockefeller Center and several others all over the US and everywhere. I like working with my sister a lot.

7. What is your favorite thing about doing print work?
I LOVE being in front of the camera. I just do! I love to pose and think of fun ways to show off the clothes I’m wearing. And aside from film and TV show projects-seriously…print jobs have the BEST snacks.

8. What was your shoot for GAP Factory like?
Ok. Again. Best snacks at the GAP. Plus they had a person there that played games with the kids. And there was a funny sweet dog-but I found out I might be allergic to some dogs! Not my own dog-but some dogs I guess. I had to wait for my face to stop being red (from the dog licking it) to get in front of the camera! Super weird!

I told my mom about a month before I got the shoot that my dream was to be in a GAP Window. She never knew that. Well-weirdly. I got the call that I booked GAP FACTORY straight from my picture (thanks OHLSSON and RAFAEL CLEMENTE). I was so, so happy. When I got to the shoot, they had a whole board to show what they would be doing with the pictures. I found out I would be in the window! Just like my dream! But. I’m not done. I’ll be in a GAP window in Manhattan. That’s what I believe.

9. How did you react seeing your images up in the store?
I was super excited! It’s my 4th time being in in-store stuff and it’s my third window during the holidays. I guess I’m a holiday window kid.

10. Is there anything you can share about the television show you worked on recently?
I can tell you that it’s a super cool premise for a show (ok, my mom says that-I’m only 7)! I can tell you that some really amazing people produce the show, like Sara Bareillis! I was a small part-but I hope I’ll get asked back another time! You never know. Totally great snacks on the set of course. It’s a show for APPLE TV. I can’t wait to see it and be able to tell you more about it!

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Caroline-I made it into Broadway Youth Ensemble too! Both my sister and I will perform with them in December at Carnegie Hall! Also, I’ll be playing “Mary” in the Actors Chapel (St. Malachy’s) Christmas Pageant-the Broadway Community’s Catholic Church.

Madeleine-I don’t get any special treatment at school for being a performer. I was finally given a solo in my school’s Christmas performance. I am proud of the work I’m doing with my singing coach! I’ll also be singing in the Christmas Pageant at the Actors Chapel of Broadway and will perform as Elizabeth in the children’s Christmas pageant.
