2017 – Vivienne Rutherford

Vivienne Rutherford played Older Arianna on Days of Our Lives. This year she has been seen in commercials for Turbo Tax, Tile, Visit California, and voiced her first animated role!

1. What was your time on set like filming your Turbo Tax commercial?

Well, it was fun! Probably the most fun I had on a set because I met Alana and Connor (two of the other haunted kids) and we played a lot while we waited!

2. What was the experience like filming with Kathy Bates?

I didn’t get to see her a lot, it was kind of all about just scaring her, but she was nice to me when I met her. She said “Are you gonna scare me!?” Then, in one of the scenes where I was shooting with her, she had to drop plates because she was scared of me, because I was a ghost in the window, and I had to keep my eyes open the whole time. I couldn’t blink, because I was a ghost, and ghosts do not blink! And it was really hard, because when she dropped those plates on the ground, it was VERY loud!

3. How did you enjoy filming your Visit California commercial?

They were really nice to me – everybody was nice. But I had to swing around the whole time, and sometimes the waves would crash into me while I upside down. One time, the director said “Action!” and I could see a wave coming at me, but I just went ahead and started saying my lines – and the wave hit me right in the face! And nobody noticed for a moment because they were all concentrating on the camera – but my pretend dad saw what happened, and he pulled me up out of the water IMMEDIATELY!

4. How did you like voicing Waddles the Puffin for Disney Jr?

That was my first animated role! I was in a little studio, and they played the lines from the other kids, so I could hear how everyone sounded and roll right into my lines. They showed me on the computer what Waddles looked like, so I got a sneak peek!

5. What was the process like shooting your commercial for Honda?

I had to wear a big blue cape because they were only filming my head. And I had to sing while this little light went around and around my head. They told me, “Don’t be scared, but the camera is going to go right by your face.” But it wasn’t too scary, I honestly wasn’t afraid of it, even though it did come really close.

6. How did you react to seeing the final cut for it and special effects?

It was weird for me because everybody at school saw it, and everyone kept saying “I saw your head!” or “I recognize that head!”

7. What was the experience like going to Romania to film a commercial?

It was weird having to travel so far to shoot, but I got to fly in the top level of the plane, which was really cool! When I was on set, people would talk to me in Romanian, and I didn’t really know what they were saying, but luckily, my pretend dad spoke English and Romanian, so he would translate for me. We went to a tea shop that had all different kinds of teas, and there was a restaurant that had a kitten who lived in there. He was really cute, but he liked to bite people as they came in! It was August, so it was really hot, and my costume was a long sleeved red shirt with flannel pajamas AND a flannel coat over that. So even though it was night-time, I was still boiling hot!

8. What was the best part of working on your set of Tile commercials?

The best part of the Romanian shoot was having the experience of traveling, and I loved working with my director Mark.

The best part of the Los Angeles shoot was getting to hold Panda Ernie and spending so much time with the crew.

9. How did you prepare all of your lines?

I worked on them at home, and then on set the director would take time to talk me through the lines I was about to say – and then that would echo through my head as we started rolling.

10. Do you have a favorite commercial you have done?

Tile! It’s my favorite because the crew in both Romania & LA – they were so nice (even though sometimes I couldn’t understand them sometimes.) I just loved them!
