2016 – Jude and Ozzy McGuigan

 

Jamie and Alister Tobias play the role of Christian Newman on The Young and The Restless. The boys have also seen in episodes of American Horror Story and Shameless. To keep up to date make sure to keep checking back here at the site.

 

1. What was the audition process like for The Young and the Restless?

It was our first audition, and they were really little. At the casting office the babies were both asleep in their car seats in the stroller. The casting director asked me a few questions, and the casting associate videotaped them sleeping in their seats. I didn’t have to get them out or wake them up.

2. How did you react when you found out they booked?

I was pretty excited; EVERYONE knows “The Young and the Restless”. Even if you don’t watch it, someone close to you does, works with someone who does, etc. So it was exciting for us and our extended family.

3. What was Jamie and Alister’s first day on set like?

We got there early because I was afraid we wouldn’t be able to find our way around the studio. But the baby nurse and the studio teacher were already looking for us. The baby nurse changed them and put them into their wardrobe. Then we just held the babies for a little bit, they were both sleepy or asleep. The stage manager came up to get us pretty much right away and the nurse suggested which baby we should take down to set. I remember being very nervous, walking a sleeping baby through a studio and putting him in a bassinet. But then they called action, the nurse said her lines and then he woke up calmly and looked right at the camera. That was it: five minutes and we were done.

4. How did it feel watching them in their first episode on TV?

It was great. I thought he looked adorable.

5. What has the experience been like for Jamie and Alister to film for The Young and the Restless?

It’s like a family, everyone is so friendly, so loving to the babies.The cast and the crew, both. Honestly, it is such a great job it has kind of spoiled us. We have done jobs where it feels almost like your baby is a prop, it has never, ever been like that at Y&R.

6. How did the boys like filming with Kelly Sullivan?

They definitely bonded. We didn’t get as much time with her as I thought we might, but they had some really interesting scenes with her, especially at the end. On our last day with her, she came by their dressing room and said how great it was working with the babies, and gave us all big hugs and kisses.

7. What is it like working with Sharon Case?

Wonderful! Sharon is so sweet and great with the babies. They aren’t really old enough to watch TV yet, but if I have an episode on and Sharon appears, they will definitely stop and watch her, point to the screen. They have even pointed to her photo in the Y&R office. It’s very cute, and they obviously attached to her.

8. What is the best part of filming with Alyvia Alyn Lind?

Everything is great about working with her. She’s young but incredibly poised and professional. And she is just a very sweet person. Our dressing room is next to hers and she always comes over and plays with the babies before they go on. She is just very natural and sisterly, on camera and off.

9. How have the boys enjoyed working with Steve Burton?

Very much. Steve was instantly comfortable with the babies, always knew what to do to calm them or settle them if they started getting fussy or antsy in a scene. You can just tell he really likes kids. I especially loved when they went camping- they have had a lot of great bonding times. It was very, very emotional to film the scenes where Dylan finds out Sully is Christian. There were one or two days on set where I would take back the baby at the end of the scene with tears in my eyes. You could really feel what his character was going through.

10. Do you have a favorite episode the boys have got to film?

I have liked a lot of the episodes they’ve done since the second reveal. I really liked the day Nick confronts Sharon. The actors have to do almost everything right in that first take, so whatever the baby is going to do, they have to make it work. They did one scene in the nursery where Nick is holding Christian for the first time and the baby started to reach for Sharon. And it wasn’t planned- but Sharon instinctively reaches back for “her” son and Nick just snatches the baby away from her in this protective gesture. And watching that episode on TV was great. It was so much story and history in that moment.
