2019 – Garren Stitt

Garren Stitt (also known as Garren Lake) played the role of Oscar on General Hospital. This year he ended his run on the soap after an emotional cancer storyline, continued his role Marty on Andi Mack and has been busy working on his music!

1. How would you say your character Marty changed over the course of Andi Mack’s run?
I think Marty changed in his confidence throughout the whole show because he really did like Buffy, and after she had rejected him he took it to heart and they had stopped talking for a while. After some time they rekindled and his confidence shot back up and decided to make a move.

2. Have you been recognized in public for your work on the show? What has been one of your most memorable fan encounters?
I always appreciate when fans come up to me to say hi or take a picture. My most memorable moment was when I got back from Utah after shooting and a fan knew I was there. I never posted about it, never showed my terminal, but he was waiting for me at the airport. Even though that could be scary, he was really kind and we shot some photos.

3. Who have been your biggest influences musically?
I have a lot of music influences. I love artists like Blackbear, Roddy Ricch, DaBaby, Juice Wrld, Future, Tory Lanez, the list goes on.

4. Which of your songs has been the most rewarding to work on and why? What can we expect from you in the upcoming months in terms of your music?
The music i’m most proud of has not been released. You can expect a lot more music coming from me soon.

5. When you found out you were nominated for a Daytime Emmy how did you react? Who was the first person you called?
When I found out I was nominated for an Emmy I was really excited. I had put a lot of hard work and dedication into my craft and for it to be acknowledged by such a respectable group encouraged me to keep working harder. My mother was with me at the time and she couldn’t have been more proud.

6. How did you prepare for for portraying Oscar through his cancer diagnosis and storyline to follow?
I did a lot of preparation by studying the terminal illness Oscar was diagnosed with. As far as my technique in how I act and prepare for scenes, I don’t really like to over study, I memorize my lines and act in the moment as if I were really going through what my character was.

7. Did any of your co-stars give you helpful advice on how to handle the emotional material/long work days that came with the story?
My mother on the show Tamara Braun who played Kim Nero, was my biggest support system while shooting the show. I have so much love and respect for her, she is truly a talented and dedicated actress.

8. How did working with Billy Miller and Tamara Braun help you grow as a young actor?
Both Billy and Tamara are super talented. When I found out that they were going to play my parents, I felt lucky because I knew how much experience they have in the soap opera world.

9. What were your last few days on set like and what was the most challenging part of carrying the episode where Oscar thinks he’s in remission?
The last few days of set were a mix of emotions. I was happy to move on to different projects but was also sad that I was leaving Tamara, Billy, Maurice, and a lot of those talented actors who I had created such a bond with. The producer Frank had gotten cakes for everyone and I gave a little thank you speech on set to the cast and crew. And as far as there being a challenge, there wasn’t really one, I had a lot of fun shooting those scenes, it pushed me as an actor.

10. Do you have a favorite overall episode you worked on during your time on General Hospital?
My favorite episode was where Oscar was in his bedroom at the Quartermaine house and you could see his spirit leave his body, followed by him being taken up to heaven by his grandparents. Those scenes especially were super fun to shoot.
