Australia offers considerable opportunities to develop its trade, investment and economic relations with Indonesia. Australia says 99% of its exports to Indonesia will be duty-free in terms of value or have improved preferential access by 2020, compared with 85% under an existing trade agreement between Australia, New Zealand and 10 Southeast Asian countries. Indonesian exports to Australia will not face tariffs, but under the Southeast Asia agreement, it already enjoys largely duty-free access to the Australian market. Trade ministers from both countries signed the agreement, which began negotiations for the first time in 2010 at a Jakarta hotel with Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla. Relations between the United States and China are plunging into the abyss. Current mistrust of their trade war has been exacerbated by suspicions of the virus`s origin and China`s early failures in managing the epidemic. The situation has become a diplomatic quarrel. A post-COVID easing in favour of the global economy seems unlikely. Two-way services trade was estimated at $6.2 billion in 2018/2019. Education-related travel dominates Australian services exports to Indonesia.
The agreement between Australia and Indonesia will allow Australian companies to invest mainly in various industrial sectors in Indonesia, including health, telecommunications, energy, mining and aged care. Australia and Indonesia are committed to deepening our economic, trade and investment relations. Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia and the 16th largest economy in the world. Indonesia is estimated to be the world`s fifth largest economy by 2030. With a population of 264 million, Indonesia offers a significant opportunity for Australian businesses. In the middle of COVID-19, an unlikely trade agreement breaks out. Negotiations were difficult, began in 2013, and then stopped until 2016. Both sides reached the agreement in 2018.
Bilateral trade negotiations between the two countries began in November 2010, with the IA-CEPA itself announced in a joint statement chaired by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Prime Minister Von Julia Gillard. [4] [5] After several conferences and meetings during 2011, another joint communiqué was issued following a meeting in Darwin on 3 July 2012, calling for the opening of negotiations by the end of the year. [6] Relations between the two countries (following the 2013 Australian spying scandal and the Indonesian execution of Australian citizens in 2015) continued, and in 2015 Indonesia imposed tariffs on imports of Australian cattle. Finally, Indonesian Trade Minister Thomas Lembong and his Australian counterpart Steven Ciobo announced the resumption of negotiations in March 2016. [7] Four rounds of negotiations took place prior to the resumption of talks. [8] Australian Trade Minister Simon Birmingham said the agreement “will lead Australian and Indonesian relations to a new aircraft in which our economic and trade relations will be much deeper, stronger and richer for our two nations.” The AI-CEPA is the first in a series of subsequent agreements that Indonesia concludes or negotiates with advanced partners.
