Nicolas Bechtel plays the role of Spencer Cassadine on General Hospital. This year he has been busy working on his Disney Channel series Stuck in the Middle which returned for season three with two holiday themed episodes!
1. How did you enjoy working on your current General Hospital storyline?
I LOVE playing Spencer. I am Spencer. I want to play Spencer when I am 25 years old. I love all the opportunities that Frank and the writers give me. It means a lot to know they trust me so much with the material.
2. What was it like working with James Patrick Stuart?
JPS is a cool guy. Off camera he’s really funny and on set he gets serious and intense with an occasional joke to make sure we’re all having fun.
3. Is there anyone in the cast you were especially excited to get to film with again?
I really love working with everyone on that cast. Everyone is special to me in their own way. Like Ryan Paevey and I just hang out and eat. Maurice is always joking around with me. Emme Rylan is always so cute and funny. She knows the things that I am into because she has two boys. Genie is like having a real life Nana on set. It’s a really special cast and I have never seen anything like it anywhere else.
4. How is working on a Disney show different compared to filming for a soap opera?
Working on a Disney show is a complete 180. It’s a single camera show so each shot takes a couple hours. It takes one whole week to tape an episode. GH is an episode a day. People don’t realize how hard daytime actors work. On Disney, I may have 5-10 lines a day and on GH I may have 30 lines in a few scenes and 10 scenes a day. The main difference is the time spent on set. At GH, I may do 7 scenes, go to school and I am done for the day. On SITM, we rarely get out early. I love both of them though.
5. What was it like filming your Hispanic Heritage commercial for Disney and sharing your family’s story?
My Hispanic Heritage commercial was special to me. I was honored that the network wanted me to share my family with the World. I love my family and I want everyone to know them!!! It allowed me to share how proud of my great-grandparents and grandparents that I am. The final result was great, my family was excited and loved it.
6. How did you react when you found out you booked Stuck in the Middle?
Oh man, the process when I auditioned for Lewie was exhausting…and LONG. It took about 2 months. We’d get a call to come back. Then we’d get a call to do a chemistry test with Jenna Ortega. Then a camera test to see what I really look like on camera. Then you wait some more. Finally, when my parents and agent got the word that I had booked Lewie Diaz we left for the Mexican Riviera and celebrated. Plus, it was my Dad’s 40th birthday. It was stressful but at the end it was so great.
7. What is it like filming a show with so many siblings?
Filming with so many siblings is probably what you’d imagine. Loud. Chaotic. Fun. Arguing. We are all very close and really care about each other but just like any siblings we have bad days. It makes me happy to see how real the chemistry looks on screen.
8. What has it been like working with Jenna Ortega again?
Jenna is my girl. Her and I are probably closest. She and I have known each other for a while and we were even roommates when we booked the show. Our moms are close and our dads know each other well. I love Jenna and I respect how hard she works. She does a great job of portraying Harley. She has the longest days and most dialogue and never complains. She is definitely the Most Valuable Diaz…LOL
9. Do you have a favorite episode you did for season two?
My favorite episode from Season 2 was Beast Day. It gave me and Beast the chance to step away from the rest of the Diazes and have our own moment. It brought us closer together and better friends. The episode turned out great.
10. Can you tell us anything about the upcoming season for Stuck in the Middle?
Season 3 is going to be great. It starts of with Stuck at Christmas the Movie and just gets better as the season goes on. It’s been a fun season and I can’t believe it’s already halfway over.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I would like to add that I am truly thankful to GH and for a fanbase that is so supportive of Spencer. I look forward to returning to GH whenever my schedule allows me to. I read all the positivity that is sent to me on social media. I am thankful that Frank allows me to come back when I am on hiatus. The writers always come up with crazy, fun material for me and I appreciate every episode that I get to play Spencer. Happy Holidays from my family to YOURS 🙂
