Tyree Brown played the role of Jabbar Trussell on Parenthood. This year he has been seen in Camp Cool Kids and been working on the film One Nation Under God!
1. How different is it to audition in the San Francisco market vs. Los Angeles?
The only differences that I have noticed is that there is usually the same kids my age at the auditions, there are way less auditions up here than in LA and there are only two main casting offices in SF versus several in LA.
2. What was your absolute favorite thing about working on Parenthood?
My absolute favorite thing was getting to know all the cast and crew and eating the wonderful crafty services food on the Parenthood set.
3. Do you still keep in touch with any of your Parenthood costars?
I am in touch mostly with Xolo and the other kids that were on the show: Savannah, Mia and Ella. Social media helps me stay in contact with the adult actors and my mom likes to send yearly updates to everyone to let them know what I’ve been up to and how I’m doing.
4. What was it like to attend the premiere of Camp Cool Kids?
It was so much fun to be able to see all my castmates and friends again since I live in Sacramento now. I was very humbled that a lot of my LA friends showed up to the premiere and got to see my younger self (since it had been two years from the film date) acting. We all had a really good time.
5. How does it feel to see yourself up on the big screen?
It’s a little weird to see myself on the big screen, but I love watching myself act. I crack myself up. I think I see things different than what other people see.
6. What was it like working with many other young actors on the film?
It’s a lot of fun to work with a bunch of kids my age because even when we weren’t filming, we hung out and did things every day. It was like a month-long playdate.
7. What is the best advice a co-star has given you while working on a project?
Dax would give me advice often, but since I was so little, I didn’t realize how important what he said was until I got a bit older. You have to work hard for what you want and have fun while doing it.
8. While role that you’ve played has been the most challenging so far?
I think the most challenging role I had was on Criminal Minds. My dad gets shot in one of the scenes I did and I thought about that happening to my own dad to get into character.
9. Can you tell us anything about your upcoming film One Nation Under God?
It’s going to be a great film with amazing actors. It has to do with a kid that wants to be able to speak about God in his school so he fights for the right to be able to say “God” in the Pledge of Allegiance.
10. What else have you been up to this year?
I joined the middle school basketball team this year and we got second place in our league. I also have a couple projects in the works for 2018. One film I will be doing is a rather small, but cool part. The other film I would be doing is still in the beginning stages of funding and scheduling. My parents and I are very picky on what projects I audition for since I am just barely turning 14. It’s important to me to be doing stuff that I am proud of and am passionate about. I have really enjoyed every project I have done so far and have never had a bad experience or worked with anyone I didn’t want to work with. I have been really blessed in that sense.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I would like to thank all the people in my life and others I don’t know that have supported me and my career to this point. My goal is to be able to make a difference in the world through my acting somehow. We all need to help each other and lift each other up to make this world a better place.
